CONCEPT-BASED CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION FOR THE THINKING CLASSROOM.

 

Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction is a three-dimensional model that utilizes facts, skills, and concepts to develop the intellect, deepen understanding, and facilitate the transfer of learning. This hands-on inquiry based workshop guides teachers step-by-step through the Concept-Based unit design process, which is adaptable to the enhanced PYP.

 

In this workshop, we explore 

• The structure of knowledge (Dr H. Lynn Erickson) and  the structure of process (Dr Lois A. Lanning) and how can we use these structures to develop the intellect.

• Moving towards a 3D curriculum and instruction model and teaching knowledge, skills and concepts with greater depth and rigor.

• The conceptual lens and how can we use it to develop synergistic thinking and increased motivation for our students.

• Writing clear and powerful conceptual understandings (Generalizations/Central Ideas).

• Developing questions to guide student inquiry from the factual to the conceptual level of understanding and scaffolding thinking.

• Assess for deep understanding.
